Have We Become a Country of Moaners?
Two years ago, I argued Malta needed to shift its tourism strategy—chasing quality over volume. The numbers since tell a mixed story: spend per capita is climbing, but still hasn't caught up to pre-pandemic levels, and a booming, younger crowd of visitors may be part of why. Meanwhile, inbound tourism has surged 165% in a decade, and total expenditure has nearly tripled. So before the daily frustrations take over—the traffic, the noise, the congestion—it's worth asking: are we genuinely worse off, or just privileged enough to afford to moan?
Hospitality Industry in Malta, 2024
Tourist arrivals in Malta jumped 24.6%, spending rose 27.6%—yet spending per capita crept up just 2.4%. The numbers are booming; the quality isn’t. It’s time Malta chose experience over volume.
Leaders lead numbers, not led by them.
Leading numbers isn’t simple—COVID-19 proved that when external shocks override even the best-laid plans. With business activity now stabilised, leaders have the chance to plan proactively again. Five principles make the difference, starting with one non-negotiable: know your cost base before you can lead revenue.
