Personal ambition is vital, but to what extent?

A company thrives when its employees are motivated—they fuel innovation, growth, and excellence. The lack of this can cause any company to stagnate and risk becoming irrelevant.

One must not look at this aspect in isolation. Personal ambition needs to be aligned with the company's common goal, thriving in the same direction and aiming for long-term success.

What happens when personal ambition takes priority over the common good?

One can consciously or unconsciously fall into the trap of putting self-interest above the common good; such a situation can erode trust. Colleagues might begin to feel exploited, sidelined, or undervalued. Your peers' motivation can suffer when they sense someone is putting their self-interest at their expense.

Recently, I came across a powerful message: 'People follow leaders they trust, not those who always try to outshine them’. This philosophy is difficult to adapt and cannot be a tick-the-box exercise; saying ‘thank you’ or ‘well done’ needs to be demonstrated continuously and genuinely.

Don’t focus on short-term wins because they lead to long-term losses. At times, a short-term period might last longer than expected. Unfortunately, certain situations take more time than expected to be exposed and rectified.

Uncheked personal ambition can win battles, not wars.

The best path:

When ambition is used for the common good, uplifting others and driving innovation without detriment to others, it becomes an unstoppable force for success.
